The current government had promised the city in the southern island of Mindanao would be completely rebuilt by the end of President Rodrigo Duterte’s term, which is due to end on June 30, 2022. It has been five years since Islamic State-linked fighters took over the city in what is known as the “siege of Marawi” in 2017. The fighting left large parts of the city in ruins, with many families displaced and over 1,100 people killed.
