24 December 2004, 0059 UTC, Mw 9.1 The 24 December 2004 9.1 Mw Northern Sumatra, Indonesia earthquake generated the deadliest tsunami in history. The earthquake is the third largest earthquake in the world since 1900 and is the largest since the 1964 Alaska earthquake. At the time of the event, there was no official tsunami warning system to alert countries. The tsunami struck the northern coast of Sumatra within 20 minutes after the earthquake, Sri Lanka in 3 hours and eastern Africa in 7 hours. In total, 227,899 people were killed or were missing and presumed dead by the earthquake and subsequent tsunami in 15 countries in Southeastern and Southern Asia and Eastern and Southern Africa. The majority of deaths were due to the tsunami.
