What is a Maximal Clique? | Graph Theory, Cliques, Maximal Cliques

What are maximal cliques? Cliques are cool, but there are some special types of cliques as well, one of which is the maximal clique, which we discuss in today's graph theory video lesson! Remember that a clique is a set of vertices that are all adjacent in a graph, or it is also sometimes defined as a complete subgraph. A maximal clique is a clique that cannot be extended by adding any other vertices of the graph to the clique. If we have a clique with vertices, say a, b, and c, and there is another vertex in the graph, let's call it d, that is adjacent to a, b, and c, then a, b, and c do not form a maximal clique because the clique could be extended by including d. However, if there is no other vertex in the graph that is adjacent to a, b, c, and d, then a, b, c, and d form a maximal clique! We can also think of a maximal clique as being a clique that is not a subset (or a subgraph, depending on the definition) of a larger clique (or a larger subgraph). We also mention maximum cliques in this lesson, which we will discuss further in another lesson. All maximum cliques are maximal, but not all maximal cliques are maximum!
