"Pennyroyal Tea" was written by Kurt in 1990 in the Olympia partment he shared with Dave. "Dave and I were screwing around on a 4-track, and I wrote that song in about thirty seconds. And I sat down for like half-an-hour and wrote the lyrics and then we recorded it", Kurt recalled. It was first performed live on April 17, 1991 at the OK Hotel in Seattle, Washington, the show at which Nirvana also debuted "Smells Like Teen Spirit." In October 1992, at Word of Mouth (former Reciprocal) in Seattle two unfinished instrumental takes were recorded by Jack Endino. One of these takes was released on the deluxe edition of "In Utero". Around that same time, Kurt recorded a home acoustic demo version. It was released on "With The Lights Out". The final version was recorded by Steve Albini at Pachyderm Studio in Cannon Falls, Minnesota in February, 1993, and officially released on "In Utero". For "Pennyroyal Tea" and "Dumb" they switched out Dave's kick drum for a smaller bass drum to achieve more jazzy sound instead of more hard rock one in the rest of "In Utero" songs. Also, "Pennyroyal Tea" and "Heart-Shaped Box" were the only songs that required more than a couple of takes. Kurt was dissatisfied with the result, he said, "it was not recorded right. There is something wrong with that. That should have been recorded like "Nevermind" because I know that's a strong song, a hit single. We're toying with the idea of re-recording it or remixing it." The song was indeed remixed by Scott Litt, who had remixed "Heart-Shaped Box" and "All Apologies" as well. This version appears on the censored Wal-Mart and Kmart versions of "In Utero", released in March 1994, and is the mix that was released as a single. It also appears on the band's two greatest hits albums, "Nirvana" (2002) and "Icon" (2010). In November 1993, Kurt performed a solo, acoustic version of the song during Nirvana's "MTV Unplugged". A full-band live electric version, featuring second guitarist Pat Smear, was recorded on February 4, 1994, for the TV show "Nulle Part Ailleurs" in Paris. "Pennyroyal Tea" was due to be released as the third single from "In Utero" in April 1994, but the single was recalled following Kurt's death. The single was re-released in April 2014. "Pennyroyal Tea" was performed for the last time live at Nirvana's final concert, on March 1, 1994, in Munich, Germany. The song's title refers to the tea made from boiling the leaves of the plant Mentha pulegium, or pennyroyal, which is used as an abortifacient, among other things, in traditional medicine. In Kurt's unused liner notes for In Utero, published posthumously in "Journals" in 2002, the entry for "Pennyroyal Tea" simply reads: "herbal abortive... it doesn't work, you hippie." In an interview in the October, Kurt gave greater insight into the song, saying that it was about a person suffering from severe depression: "Penny royal tea" is a herbal abortive. I threw that in because I have so many friends who have tried to use that, and it never worked. The song is about a person who's beyond depressed; they're in their death bed, pretty much". Kurt's own bout with serious stomach pain was well documented last year and he admits, "Yeah, it did rub off on the song". As for the "Leonard Cohen afterworld", Kurt said, "That was my therapy, when I was depressed and sick. I'd read things like "Malloy Dies" by Beckett (Kurt misspelled the actual novel's title, which is "Malone Dies"), or listen to Leonard Cohen, which would actually make it worse". Lyrics: I'm on my time with everyone I have very bad posture Sit and drink Pennyroyal Tea Distill the life that's inside of me Sit and drink Pennyroyal Tea I'm anemic royalty Give me a Leonard Cohen afterworld So I can sigh eternally I'm so tired I can't sleep I'm a liar and a thief Sit and drink pennyroyal Tea I'm anemic royalty I'm on warm milk and laxatives Cherry-flavored antacids Sit and drink Pennyroyal Tea Distill the life that's inside of me Sit and drink Pennyroyal Tea I'm anemic royalty
