We are starting the year with a session on journalism, media and technology trends and predictions for 2024. In what has become an annual development, the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism published an outlook of trends and predictions for the year ahead authored by Senior Associate Nic Newman. An industry survey of more than 300 digital leaders from over 50 countries and territories helped guide the themes in the report. At a politically and economically volatile time for the world, artificial intelligence (AI) as a disruptive force is expected to “sweep through the information space this year,” challenging journalists and news organizations in myriad ways. Search Generative Experiences (SGE) and AI-driven chatbots will offer faster, more intuitive ways to access information, Newman writes, and will further reduce traffic to news sites over time. Declining ad revenue, rising costs and a slowdown in subscriptions present additional challenges. Publishers are adapting by focusing on direct channels, exploring alternative platforms, and creating more video content, while subscription and membership models will remain key revenue streams. But the future, according to the report, will entail a shift from daily print production, bundling digital news with non-news content, and big tech platforms emphasizing paid models. Newman will join us for our next webinar to share additional insights from his report. A journalist and digital strategist, Newman played a key role in shaping the BBC's internet services over more than a decade. He was a founding member of the BBC News website, leading international coverage as world editor (1997-2001). As head of product development for BBC News, he helped introduce innovations such as blogs, podcasting and on-demand video. Most recently he led digital teams, developing websites, mobile and interactive TV applications for news, sports, weather and local. Be part of our global network!
