Actress and author Cameron Diaz is interviewed by DLF Executive Director Bob Roth on her personal practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique. Bob Roth: "Why did you decide to learn Transcendental Meditation? What was it in your life at that time that you thought 'this would be something good for me'?" Cameron Diaz: "I would try meditation because I knew there was something there for me, but every time I would try to do it, I was incapable. One day, my girlfriend Jessica Seinfeld said to me "You are going to learn to meditate. You better be ready!" Cameron Diaz: "So I learned and it was exactly what I needed. The thing that blew me away the most about it was that it was the easiest thing I've ever done - not the easiest meditation, but the easiest thing I have ever learned. I learn a lot of things; that's my job! I'll spend months learning something. And this took me an hour the first time; it's also what you get out of it." Cameron Diaz: "The fact that it's so simple to learn. It's so simple to practice. And, yet the amount of restoration that comes to you - the benefit across your life - it has changed everything." Cameron Diaz: "I just had my family and my boyfriend's family meet together for the first time over Thanksgiving, everybody in our apartment for five days. And let me tell you something. It can benefit relationships. And I got them all to learn. So it was the most dynamic Holiday everyone had, in the best way, because everyone had this new tool that they never had before for dealing with a moment that could be stressful. Instead we all sat together and meditated every morning for four days. It was beautiful, it really bonded everyone. It was really special." Bob Roth: "Tell us about the time when you were filming and it was hot and you couldn't remember.." Cameron Diaz: "I was doing a film and we had been filming in Boston and we came to LA for a week. We went from the Fall, nice and cozy, to LA which was about 90 degrees in the valley at the zoo, parking lot, under a tent, in a car, under lights, with the windows up, no air conditioning. It was about 1000 degrees in the car, and I had a monologue and I couldn't remember my lines. I knew I knew them; I couldn't access them." "So I said, I need 25 minutes, I just need 25 minutes. I ran back to my trailer and I re-booted and did my 20 minute meditation. I came back in and nailed it! Done. Thank you very much. And we were out of there in like 20 minutes." Cameron Diaz: "The thing that I love about TM is that you don't have to convince somebody to believe in something. They don't have to understand a different faith. TM is helping you tap into something that's already inside, that's you in essence. That was super empowering once I grasped that. It's not just something you do that you go outside of yourself to obtain; it's actually the deepest part of you that exists that you've never had the tool of opening and accessing. So, to have that tool, to go inside and to access and recharge my battery internally, I think it's so awesome." "It's so gratifying to allow people to heal, regenerate and restore themselves. TM is helping you tap into something that's already inside of you - that's you in essence." Bob Roth: "We're working to bring meditation all over the world, so we want to start here in New York, if we can make it happen here, we can change the world. Cameron, thank you."
