Hailing from Seattle, Queensryche would emerge in the 80’s and built up a fanbase on thestrength of an EP and three album releases including 1988’s critically acclaimed record Operation Mindcrime. Queenscryche would kick off the 90’s with their commercial breakthrough - Empire. The album attracted a lot of newer fans thanks to the cross format hit Silent Lucidity . But you maybe interested to know that the song almost never made it onto the album and frontman Geoff Tate refuses to sing the song for friends after one odd occurrence. Let’s talk about the song in today’s video. Queensryche’s history dates back to the late 70’s and early 80’s when guitarists chris Degarmo and michael wilton were playing together in several bands including one called Joker. Here’s Chris Degarmo discussing what came next. With a name in tow and some songs, they just needed a singer so they approached a local musician, vocalist Geoff Tate. Tate would sing on the group’s self titled EP, which got a 1982 release. Despite singing on the EP, Tate wasn’t 100% committed to the project, dabbling in other groups, but after the EP received a stellar review in Kerrang, the sales increased exponentially. Tate would change his mind and front the group permanently. All that attention soon got on the radars of record labels with Queensryche signing a deal with EMI who released their debut record in 1984 titled ‘The Warning’ and 1986’s ‘Rage For Order’ both of which sold half a million copies They followed it up with 1988’s critically acclaimed Operation Mindcrime - a concept record that tels the story of a heroin addict who becomes disillusioned with society and becomes a political assassin. The record would peak at number 50 in the states with the singles Eyes of a Stranger and I don’t believe in Love became the band’s first charting singles in the states. For the group’s fourth record they would work with Rush and Alice Cooper producer Peter collins in vancouver. Empire, while not a concept record proved to be more of a challenge to write with Tate telling metal edge magazine: It was more difficult because we didn’t have a theme to write on. When you have a theme it gives you a little bit of an outline of what to do. This is just a collection of songs. Tate would reveal in another interview himself and Chris Degarmo saw the band as constantly evolving and wanting to take it in a new direction. Empire touches on social issues like homelessness and poverty in Della Brown - the song would be written about a women the band would see on their way to rehearsals each day, while Best I can deals with living with a disability. The album’s title track tackles the crack epidemic and drug trafficking But despite the dark subject matter the Degarmo would tell metal edge that compared to operation mindcrime Empire is a more positive record about the choices people have to make making a statement that’s eerily reminiscent of our society today telling metal edge It’s sort of an analysis of our instant society – everything has to be now. A young person thinks they need to have all these material things and have their life together by 16, and it leads many of them on what appears to be a road to success from a money standpoint but from a long-term standpoint it’s a path to hell.
