Double Header: Climbing Mt Hood and Crater Rock

We climbed Mt Hood via Old Chute / 1 O'Clock Couloiron May 31st, 2024. Weather window looked great, but snow was frozen solid. I had a ton of problems skinning from the parking lot and had to put on crampons almost immediately. We followed a groomed track that started out steep and never really let up. That ended at the top of the Palmer chair lift, where I transitioned to booting, and we all put on crampons. We reached Devil's Kitchen by first light, and I left my splitboard there. From Devil's Kitchen, we climbed up and left, over the Hogsback (which was pretty mellow) and did a low traverse over to Hot Rocks. From there, we climbed up through the rocks and gravel and headed up to the Old Chute, following the numerous other parties heading up. As far as I can tell, we climbed up 1 OClock Couloir. The ascent wasn't that bad, snow was hard so crampons bit in well, and there was a pretty solid set of steps the whole way up. Two ice-axes were helpful, but not required. Views from the ridge were spectacular, and the walk to the summit was short and well traveled. We took some selfies here and headed back since the area was getting crowded. There was a party heading up the chute we had climbed, so I decided to climb down the steeper and narrower one that was climbers right. This required face-in downclimbing, and two ice axes definitely helped. Eventually I got low enough that I could turn around and walk downhill, and met up with the rest of the party. From below Hot Rocks, I decided to explore Crater Rock and aimed for saddle that was closer to Hood. Climbing up there was pretty chossy with lots of soft soil, but not too steep. To get to the saddle, I had to do a large step from the rocks up to the hard snow, then traverse across the steep ridge to a flatter area, then the summit. Down climbing wasn't any harder. The snow was pretty hard at Devil's Kitchen since it was still in the shade, so I carried out my splitboard out to the sunshine and set it up. Unfortunately, it was still way too early in the day, the snow was rock hard and covered in sharp spikes, so most of the descent was chattery and unpleasant. The groomed snow below Palmer lift was much better, but here I discovered that I was missing my video device (Osmo Pocket 3), so ended up hiking back up to the top of the lift. I tried to use my drone to see if I could spot it, but didn't manage to see anything, so ended up hiking back up, trying to follow my tracks to find it. The search was fruitless, so I ended up going back to my gear and racing down the groomers to catch up with the rest of the group who had already reached the parking lot. Luckily for me, someone found the device and since I told the lost and found about it, it got returned to me several weeks later in working order, and with all of this footage still on it.
