Other references: / @livegigvideos_ / @chinee / @bg_kpop / @blackpinkcalius Preface: On the eve of the Blackpink Coachella 2023 performance, I dive into the K-Pop controversies concerning racism, cultural appropriation, and cultural insensitivity involving Jennie, Lisa, Jisoo, and Rosé. From mocking a Native American war cry in their 2016 “Boombayah” music video which they continued to do on their 2022 Born Pink World Tour, to the use of box braids in Ki This Love along with ponytail braids by Lalisa in her Money Performance Video and cornrows by Jennie Ruby Jane in HBO series “The Idol” by The Weeknd, to the disrespect of Hindu & Indian culture- the YG Entertainment girl group has not shied away from being problematic despite being called out since their debut. Their use of Black women’s aesthetic (e.g. grills, long nails, baby hairs, dressing like TLC etc.), rapping with a blaccent + incorrect AAVE (African American Vernacular English), and hip-hop commentary in Billboard Magazine + Rolling Stone has come under scrutiny by some Black K-Pop fans. But commodifying Black culture is a billion dollar business, do they even care? This commentary video covers it all. Pink Venom M/V, How You Like That, and As If It’s Your Last are also discussed.
