Did you know that Sashiko is a form of decorative stitching that originates from Japan? It can be used to repair, mend and patch garments in a creative way while reinforcing the fabric. Leigh, who runs workshops in traditional textiles skills for school pupils and visiting groups at The Prince’s Foundation’s base at Trinity Buoy Wharf in London, has created an easy-to-follow tutorial that acts as an introduction to visible mending. To have a go, all you need is a garment that needs mending, a scrap piece of fabric, a pair of scissors, darning needles and pins, Sashiko or embroidery thread and a piece of chalk or a fabric pen.
