SUITCASE BLUES | Stephanie Trick

Hersal Thomas, one of the pioneers of boogie woogie piano, composed some of the staples of the boogie repertoire, including “The Rocks” and “The Fives,” as well as this classic from 1925: his “Suitcase Blues.” He came from a very musical family, and he collaborated with his brother, George Washington Thomas, a pianist and composer, and his sister, Sippie Wallace, was a blues singer. Albert Ammons, who was influenced by Thomas’ unique style, made his version of “Suitcase Blues” which has in turn had an influence on the way this composition has been played over the years.
