Ultimate Secrets of the Mad Mage's Level One

Patreon: https://patreon.com/user?u=53475063 This is the final video in my series exploring the level one dungeon of the Mad Mage for lessons in homebrewing your own dungeon. In this video I look at the area I call the "heart of the dungeon," because it contains many of the classic tropes of dungeon design. These include: The risks and rewards for players exploring every room and hallway of a dungeon level. Where the exits and entrances should be on each level, and where they should lead. The importance of having a major power on each level and what they should control. Making sure you create a dynamic dungeon that develops in contemporaneous time with the players, as opposed to the static dungeon where monsters are held in place, waiting for the players to arrive. Creating resource draining encounters that force the players to use spells. In each of these classic tropes I point to examples in the level one dungeon of the Mad Mage, both good and bad. I talk about the history of dungeon design and methods we used to force players to explore every room, which often meant putting in items or bits of information that were crucial to success on deeper levels. The more modern method is to merely spread treasure through out a level to incite players to explore, as opposed to forcing them. This first level does this as well. In terms of finding exits I talk about stairs and gates, and where they should be in relation to the entrance of a level. Here again, in the past the route between entrances and exits was often very long and torturous, whereas today we make it much easier, and use gates to let higher level players quickly access lower levels. Here again the level one dungeon of the Mad Mage follows this example, though the sole gate on the level is only for 11th level or higher players! The main power group of the level, a group of bugbears/goblins controlled by Xanathar the beholder, guard the entrance to level 2, another classic of dungeon design. Xanathar has furthered placed 5 intellect devourers in the bugbears, adding an additional threat to any players who encounter them, since a successful body thief attack by an intellect devourer is extremely nasty! I then discuss the advantages of having a dynamic dungeon, showing both good and bad examples from the mad mage's level one. The players will meet several NPC's trapped in the dungeon, showing that these figures are moving through time like the players. I then talk about weaknesses in the dungeon, which include the concept of the Undertakers posing as vampires and dungeon geography. Finally I discuss whether you should use the classic resource drain encounter, in which the monster is only there to attack the players and has no connection to a storyline and no treasure. While I am sympathetic to those who feel these encounters are time wasters, I also think that when handled carefully they can give the players a sense that a dungeon is in itself a very dangerous place!
