We are out in Colorado right now and decided to finally drive the Million Dollar Highway! Also known as Highway 550, the Million Dollar Highway starts in Durango, Colorado, runs north through Silverton, then continues on to Ouray. It is famous for its winding road, high elevation and amazing views. There are lots of ideas about how the name "Million Dollar Highway" originated. Some say that locals started it by saying "I won't drive that road for a million dollars", while others say it is because of the cost involved in modernizing and paving the road (it was expensive!). I think it's because of the "million dollar views" around every curve, but that's just me. You'll leave Durango, a town named after Durango, Mexico, located at 6522 feet above sea level. Established in 1881, Durango features amazing hiking, mountain biking and skiing. Driving north you'll find a few amazing shops, including Honeyville, just a few miles outside of town. If you're a fan of honey, they'll have all you'll need! Continuing north you'll reach Silverton, a small town founded in 1874. At an elevation of 9318, it is one of the highest towns in the US. Mining was the primary focus of the economy there from the late 19th century all the way up to 1992. Now they focus on tourism, and it's a fun town to visit. As you continue your drive north, the road between Silverton and Ouray gets a little "sketchier". It's a fun drive though, just pay attention to the road as many parts of the road don't have guiderails! As you get close to Ouray you'll be greeted with amazing views of this tiny town. Founded in 1877, Ouray is located at an elevation of 7792 feet. It's named after Chief Ouray of the Ute Indians, a native tribe to the area. In each of the towns you'll find outstanding places to eat, lots of shopping, as well as amazing scenery. We had an fun day driving and exploring and hope to do it again soon!
