Many studies have been done to determine the toxicity of acetone. It is not a carcinogen and only causes slight irritation when inhaled, but can cause damage if it makes contact with the eyes. Acetic acid is even less toxic than acetone, but in nail polish remover these chemicals and others are extremely dehydrating to the skin, cause irritation to eyes and can slowly cause nails to become dry and brittle. Most removers will contain small amounts of oils to counteract these negative effects, but they do little to help. The reason strong chemicals, like acetone and ethyl acetate, are used is because they remove the nail polish from the nail quickly and with minimal effort. The problem with weaker natural removers that contain no harmful solvents is that they can make the process of removing nail polish strenuous. They require more physical effort; however, the do not strip the nail bed of its natural oils like acetone-based removers do. In fact, many natural nail polish removers can further hydrate nails. Natural removers replace solvents like acetone with greener and more natural solvents like D-limonene, ethyl lactate, propylene carbonate, and methyl soyate.
