Day one in Yangon | The BEST welcome to Myanmar

Today is our first day in Myanmar and we are so excited for our time in our 3rd country to begin! After flying from Singapore to Yangon the night before, we get out early to explore the city of Yangon. Our plan is to start with a 15 minute walk from our hostel to the Sule Pagoda but 15 minutes quickly turns into an hour as we keep turning off onto side streets where they are having morning markets. There is so much to see and take in and we love getting lost in the side streets and getting a glimpse into local life. We then make it to the Sule Pagoda which is a small Pagoda in the center of town all the main streets seem to lead toward. From the Sula Pagoda we head to the Bogyoke Aung San Market for lunch. We pick a stall where a lot of local people are eating. While we get off to a bit of an awkward start as the menu is in Burmese and the owners of the food stall do not speak any English (and of course we do not speak Burmese), this quickly becomes one of our favorite meals of all time. This is all thanks to the man sitting next to us who jumps in and orders a few dishes for us (I will add he also does not speak any English). Once the food comes, he sends something back to get some sauce added... he takes my chopsticks and stirs one of our other dishes because we clearly are struggling. We exchange no words that either of us can understand but we still share many, many laughs together. The food was all DELICIOUS! We still don't know what we ate... and everything was under $2 USD! It was such an incredible, authentic and unexpected experience and it has us LOVING Myanmar from day 1. From the market we head back to our hostel to relax a bit and then go to the Shwedagon Pagoda at sunset. This pagoda is Yangon’s most famous landmark. It is a gold plated pagoda that measures nearly 100 meters high and is over 2,500 years old. The pagoda alone is incredibly impressive but as the sun sets, the monks begin to light the candles surrounding the pagoda, the bells are chiming, people are praying and it is such a peaceful and magical setting. We finish up at a couple different night markets and then call it a night after an AMAZING first day and introduction into Myanmar. We are now even more excited for what is in store in this country!
