I would advise anybody with a sailboat to run a boom-brake instead of a preventer. The boom-brake lets the boom come across slowly in the event of an accidental jibe (gybe) and results in the boat heaving-to instead of getting slammed over. I use a climbing figure-8 instead of a brake from a 'marine' supplier. It's a fraction of the cost of a marine version, and the grade of aluminium is suitable for marine environments.
