De’Aaron Fox finished third on the Most Improved Player Award ballot. He finished in the top 10 in the league in assists and steals. Fox maybe manufactures space better than anyone his age (he turned 21 in December). He is FAST. Everyone knows this, but he also plays the game at multiple speeds. He’s Westbrook and Wall in the open court, sure, but he’s got enough Chris Paul, Mike Conley, and Damian Lillard in his stop-and-go game and that’s really what makes him lethal. He’s shifty and crafty and so wiry strong that it must be a nightmare for defenders because he’ll initiate contact and they bounce right off. Plus, lefties always seem to glide a little more in the league. Zach Lowe wrote: “It was clear right away in Year 2 that Fox had graduated from reacting to manipulating defenses. He understood how the second and third lines of defense would respond to every glance and fake, and he began using that against them. He could change pace and toy with help defenders.” You can see that in many of the clips here: he knows he’s going to get past his guy, but how he reads that back line, the second wave of defenders, determines how he’s going to get his shot up. He can dance if he wants to, he’ll leave his defender behind, but if the help don’t glance (over), they’ve got NO chance, and he’ll leave them all behind. Aside from LeBron James, De’Aaron is the only other player in NBA history with a 30 point triple-double before turning 21, also, he’s the youngest player ever to have a 30 points, 15 assist, 10 rebound game since Magic Johnson. That type of HYPER elite company kind of makes it feel like he's going to be a VERY special player in the years to come. If he can keep making incremental jumps, we’re looking at a top 10 player in the league for the next decade and who knows how long after. https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/2...
