This 8 minute clip is a useful tool at a start of a dialogue on Gender-based / Interpersonal or Domestic Violence dialogue or training. The Soul City 4 TV drama went on air on the 7th of July 1999. For the next 13 weeks, South African audiences followed Matlakala – a much-loved character – as her husband Thabang becomes emotionally and physically abusive. The abuse has severe consequences on Matlakala and her children. Audiences see the once confident Matlakala’s self-esteem plummet and depression set in as she is under increasing family pressure to ‘make her marriage work’ and accept her situation. With the support of friends and community, and through the toll free Stop Woman Abuse Helpline, Matlakala learns about her legal rights and other forms of support. She then begins an inspiring journey to reclaim her life. Thabang, a highly respected teacher in the community, also goes through a journey of self-examination as his life crumbles around him. The series shows the community shift from ‘silent collusion’ with the abuse to active opposition of it.
