ED arrests TMC leader Anubrata Mondal's daughter in West Bengal cattle smuggling case

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Wednesday arrested TMC leader Anubrata Mondal's daughter Sukanya Mondal on money laundering charges linked to an alleged cattle smuggling case, official sources said. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested the daughter of Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Anubrata Mondal in connection with a cattle smuggling case in West Bengal. The accused, Sudiptiata Mondal, was detained on June 11 and produced before a court, which sent her to ED custody for six days. The ED has claimed that the proceeds from the cattle smuggling racket have been used to finance "anti-national activities". The agency suspects that the funds raised were also used to fuel political unrest in the state. The ED had earlier arrested two persons, including a relative of Anubrata Mondal, in connection with the case in May. Anubrata Mondal is considered a close aide of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and his daughter's arrest is likely to fuel the ongoing political tensions between the TMC and the central government. The arrest comes at a time when the ruling TMC is facing widespread criticism over the post-poll violence that erupted in the state following the Assembly elections. The ED is investigating the case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and has sought assistance from the BSF, which had intercepted a truck carrying cattle at the India-Bangladesh border. The agency is likely to investigate the role of other individuals and entities involved in the case. The accused is innocent until proven guilty and the investigation should proceed in a fair and transparent manner to uncover the truth.
