Jamestown Settlement’s ship Susan Constant is the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation’s second re-creation of the original Susan Constant that brought the first English settlers to Virginia in 1607. The ship was built from 1989 to 1991 at the museum to replace the first re-creation of the ship, built in 1957. Now 33 years later and after 18 million visitors, our “floating classroom” departed Jamestown Settlement on June 17, 2024, and traveled to the Henry B. du Pont Preservation Shipyard at Mystic Seaport Museum in Connecticut to begin a comprehensive two-year restoration project to repair its hull planking, upper framing, mast and rigging components, and other pivotal hull structures, to preserve the ship for future generations. Fortunately, wooden ships are constructed in a way that allows removal and renewal of deteriorated parts and Mystic Seaport Museum’s shipyard, which works exclusively on wooden ships, has been a leader in maritime preservation and is ideally suited for large wooden vessel restoration projects like Susan Constant. While Susan Constant is at Mystic Seaport Museum, Godspeed and Discovery remain at Jamestown Settlement and open for visitors. We invite our viewers and our museum visitors to follow the progress of the ship’s repair and restoration through the social media of the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation and Mystic Seaport Museum.
