Prelude - 00:00 Fugue - 2:33 The 1st prelude from the first book of the famous Well-Tempered Clavier collection published in 1722, one of the best known demonstrations of simplicity by dear mister Sebastian, but also of how you tell a whole story just by harmonic progressions, without any kind of melody or motivic structure. The 4-part fugue, probably not as well known because of its complexity and difficulty (in contrast with the prelude), is a whole different kind of marvelous beast. The subject pops up from everywhere, ceaselessly, in combination with itself in various ways, and yet always enjoyable and fresh... never overwhelming.
