Cultivating a Culture of Equity: San Mateo County Leverages PHIG Funding to Hire Equity Coordinator

Nupoor Kulkami, Community Health Planner with the San Mateo County Public Health Department, tells us how her agency - as an indirect recipient of Public Health Infrastructure Grant (PHIG) funding via the state of California’s health department - utilized PHIG support to hire a full-time equity coordinator. San Mateo county has embedded equity into their strategic plan, and this new role is crucial for maintain progress toward and accountability to that plan. Having dedicated staff and an Equity Plan workgroup has helped San Mateo County begin building an equity-focused culture. This includes innovative and creative activities, like equity tarot cards, to help all staff engage with these concepts and operationalize equity in their day-to-day work.
