Evening At Pops: Live On Opening Night | John Williams and the Boston Pops Orchestra | April 1980

"John Williams makes his national television debut as new conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra Tuesday night in a live, two-hour extravaganza, with heavy overtones of Academy Awards night, "Star Wars," "Jaws," and "Close Encounters" all rolled into one. "Evening At Pops: Live On Opening Night," (Channel 2, 8-10 p.m.), is a special pre-season premiere of the popular WGBH-produced public TV network series, which will air on PBS regularly, beginning in June. Internationally-acclaimed violinist Isaac Stern, actor Burgess Meredith and the first android ever to make a Pops guest shot will share Tuesday's Symphony Hall spotlight. C-3PO, the golden robot from the film "Star Wars," will make an appearance, and may be accompanied by other interstellar stars, according to reliable galactic sources. Another golden character—the Academy Awards Oscar—will be a major Force in the program as Williams' music, which won him Academy honors for three motion pictures, will be among the selections by the orchestra and by guest artist Stern. Three major performing segments and two intermission programs will comprise the opening night gala, a joint production of WGBH and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, produced by William Cosel. Virtuoso Stern will open with several selections from the works of Fritz Kreisler, and the Cadenza from "Fiddler On The Roof." Stern played the musical portion of the film's sound track, and the "Fiddler" score by Williams won him an Oscar. The first intermission will feature a film history of the Pops Orchestra and its renowned conductor, the late Arthur Fiedler, and a profile of the new conductor, highlighting Williams' accomplishments and qualifications which earned him the post. The second segment will find Meredith at center stage, reading a piece for narrator and orchestra based on WIlliam Faulkner's "The Reivers." The adaptation was done for the Pops by the Hollywood writing team of Irving and Harriet Ravetch, with a musical score by conductor Williams. Meredith narrated the film adaptation of "The Reivers." The second intermission will comprise live interviews, backstage, with Williams, Stern, and Meredith. The personable C-3PO makes his Symphony Hall debut in the final major segment, and Williams will conduct the Pops Orchestra in a medley of the music from "Star Wars," "Jaws," and "Close Encounters of a Third Kind." In a special program highlight, the orchestra will play two selections composed by Williams from his film score to "The Empire Strikes Back," the sequel to "Star Wars," marking C-3PO's appearance. A medley of the works of Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim will be included in the program, and Williams will lead the orchestra in his composition "The Cowboys" overture, and "Spitfire," by William Walton. The orchestra also will perform "After Love Is Gone," by Earth, Wind and Fire, and "Cabaret" by John Kander. " McLean, Robert A. "It's Debut Day for Williams, Pops on Video."
