NEWARK AND SHERWOOD PARISH #38: LANGFORD Langford is located four miles north-east of Newark and two miles East of The River Trent. It’s based on A1133 which in turn branches off of the A46 between Newark and Lincoln Langford has an interesting history for such a small place. This was at one time, the epicentre of the local wool trade thanks to John Barton, the wealthy wool merchant discussed in these parts before It’s got two halls – Langford Hall and Langford Old Hall, both of equal importance. Village wise, it’s always been small, although as we journey around, we’ll learn exactly why. It’s also changed considerably within the last 500 years, and there’s an unusual reason why. In Saxon times, most of the parish was moorland. It wasn’t until the Middle Ages the land was developed, partly by the Knights Templar, before they were suppressed in 1303. It was then dominated by sheep farming for centuries These days its tiny population have diversified into other trades. For example, Langford is where you’ll find Newark Fine Furniture – and we’ll talk about them as we walk around. To finish with, we have a special trip to one of the most well known local landmarks, although I’d wager that not many people know it falls within Langford parish.
