North Yorkshire Moors Railway - 'Annual Steam Gala' 27-28/09/2024

It's not often that any event on a preserved railway features traction from all of the 'Big Four' railway companies - and with BR Standards present on the side. However, with three carefully selected visitors, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway pulled it off in style for their 'Annual Steam Gala'; held over the weekend of the 26th to the 29th of September. Journeying north from its Dorset home, 34028 “Eddystone” would be visiting from the Swanage Railway courtesy of Southern Locomotives Ltd. The Bulleid pacific last visited the NYMR in 2006, where it suffered from slipped tyres resulting in the locomotive being temporarily withdrawn. 4953 “Pitchford Hall” would also make the long journey to the north, visiting courtesy of the Epping Ongar Railway. Completing the visiting trio would be S160 Class - 2253 “Omaha”, visiting courtesy of Dartmouth Steam Railway and Peter Best. 2253 is a previous resident of the NYMR, making its return to the Moors into something of a homecoming. These three visitors would be joined by a bank of resident locomotives over the event, bringing the total up to 11 locomotives in service across the weekend; operating a range of passenger services as well as demonstration freight turns. Resident 9F Class - 92134 would spend much of the gala on banking duties between Grosmont and Goathland, tailing services up the 1-in-49 gradient. As such, it was deemed fitting to have the 9F masquerade as scrapped classmate 92079, including the fitting of a headlamp. 92079 had taken over banking duties on the Lickey Incline in 1956 when it was allocated to 21C Bromsgrove, and remained ‘The Lickey Banker’ until being reallocated to 8H Birkenhead Mollington Street in 1963.
