STORYLINE: Protesters from student organizations took to the streets of New Delhi on Monday to show their support for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Many gathered outside the Israeli embassy, where several protesters were detained. As they were carried away on buses, the protesters called out slogans in support of the Palestinian people. India on Sunday sent nearly 6.5 tonnes (7.1 tons) of medical aid and 32 tonnes (35 tons) of disaster relief supplies to Palestinians. An Indian air force plane carrying the materials left New Delhi for Egypt’s El-Arish airport, said Arindam Bagchi, an External Affairs Ministry spokesman. The aid includes essential life-saving medicines, surgical items, tents, sleeping bags, tarps and water purification tablets among other items, he said. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed condolences and sympathy for those killed and wounded as a result of the attacks in Israel and said that Indian people stand in solidarity with Israel. India has reiterated its position in favor of direct negotiations for establishing a two-state solution. The Israel-Hamas war reached its 17th day on Monday after Hamas militants from the Gaza Strip blew through Israel’s highly fortified separation wall on October 7, and attacked an open-air music festival and the Israeli border communities, killing scores of people and abducting men, women, babies and children — including elderly and disabled. Israel launched airstrikes on the Gaza Strip and sealed it off from food, fuel and other supplies in retaliation for the bloody incursion by the Hamas militants, vowing to destroy the militant group.
