Backpacking the Sleeping Giant

In southern Ontario, Canada near Thunder Bay, our group of seven circled the tip of the Sibley Peninsula on an area called the Sleeping Giant. The four day adventure provided beautiful views of the bay while challenging us with some steep and rugged trails. On the first day we hiked past the Sea Lion and Tee Habour to Lehtinen's Bay. We then took a difficult spur trail up to a look out called the knees of the giant. It provided a breathtaking view and deep gorge with a scary drop off. On the second day, we hiked through a boulder field to the Thunder Cape Bird Observatory. We were able to talk with staff and volunteers at the observatory about how they track the migration of song birds. We then continued our hike to Sawyer Bay. The beach at Sawyer Bay provided a picturesque beach for camping. On day 3, some of us made a straight up hike to the head of the giant. Obviously Canadians do not believe in switchbacks, but the hike was worth the awesome view. Then the whole group made the hike to the Twin Lakes Trail campsite. This beautiful campsite, with a spectacular fire ring, is also located right off the lake and a beach that we enjoyed the sunset from. On the 4th day, we hiked the Twin Lakes Trail campsite to Clavet Bay. After a short break we meet the steep climb to the Thunder Bay Lookout. Wow!
