34067 "Tangmere" returns south with 'The Medway Valley Pullman' 26/11/2022

The first railtour for UK Railtours in their 2022 Christmas Programme, saw them partner with Belmond to deliver a Pullman service to the south-east, with traction provided by Ex-SR 'Battle of Britain' Class - 34067 "Tangmere" and supported by West Coast Railways Class 47 - 47813. Starting out of London Victoria, 34067 worked the tour south via Brixton, Tulse Hill, Streatham and Croydon to Redhill. Here, the tour would venture east working through Penshurst to Tonbridge where the Bulleid pacific took a water stop, before carrying on down the South Eastern Mainline to Paddock Wood. Turning onto the Medway Valley Line, 34067 hauled the tour north through Maidstone and on to Strood. 47813 would then reverse the tour into Rochester, for 34067 to regain command for a dash up Sole Street bank and the Chatham Mainline as the tour returned to the capital. Starting the day east of Redhill, the Bulleid pacific was captured striding away from a pathing stop at Penshurst, as it headed for Tonbridge. Overtaking the tour, 34067 made for a fine sight gliding through the Medway Valley, passing Teston. Finally, at the top of Sole Street bank, 34067 powered up the 1-in-550 gradient through Sole Street station, just after the gradient eases from the 1-in-100 climb away from Strood. Due to circumstances beyond the control of the organisers, the tour was slightly detatched from the original plan. Firstly, once the tour had reached Strood, the original route was to take the North Kent Line via Gravesend back to the capital. However, due to engineering work this was not possible, with the Chatham Mainline route being the most viable deviation. Secondly, 35028 "Clan Line" had been rostered to haul the excursion, but was withdrawn from service due to remedial work being required on the boiler; with 34067 "Tangmere" provided as a substitute, courtesy of West Coast Railways. As such, this tour stands as testament to the commendable efforts of the organisers, to ensure the tour still ran in the circumstances. 'The Medway Valley Pullman' marked the first time steam has worked on the Medway Valley Line for over 20 years, as well as 34067's first railtour on the southern region since its most recent overhaul. 34067 would be adorned by 'Golden Arrow' regalia, in commemoration of 2022 marking the 50th anniversary of the final 'Golden Arrow' service; which ran on the 30th of September 1972. All footage filmed on Saturday the 26th of November 2022.
