To find out more about urban composting or my journey please visit my website - https://my-sustainability-journey.com #Urbancomposting is one the most important things you can do to become more sustainable in your daily living. Composting in urban areas has a massive impact on waste reduction and provides incredibly high quality, nutrient-rich soil that you can use to grow healthy and strong vegetables at home. Home composting may seem like a daunting task. However, the Bokashi Method has been designed to use a very small amount of space and process leftover foods incredibly efficiently. I am using 2 x 25L buckets that are stored on top of each other and the #bokashi bran is stored in the cupboard. That is practically no space that is needed. I then add my fermented Bokashi to our bigger compost pile, but it can be added to worm farms and even added directly to your vegetable beds. If you are adding your Bokashi directly to in your beds then just make sure you dig at least 30cm down. If you have been thinking about the prospect of #composting at home in an urban environment but you have been worried about space, smells and applications then you seriously need to consider the Bokashi composting method. WHAT YOU NEED TO START BOKASHI COMPOSTING 1. You will need an air-tight bucket or container. I use a 25L bucket with a tap to drain off compost tea. 2. You will need to get bokashi bran to layer on your food layers 3. Food scraps and leftovers to add to the bin 4. A space to add the bokashi compost once it has finished fermenting HOW TO USE BOKASHI FOR COMPOSTING Step 1 - Get everything you will need to start bokashi composting and follow instructions to set up your bucket Step 2 - Add a 1st layer of bokashi bran (I use a quarter cup bran per layer) on the base (internal strainer) before adding the first latter of foods. Close the lid tightly and always close after adding new layers Step 3 - Add a layer of food scraps roughly 10cm thick, or use a 2.5L or similar container to store kitchen scraps and add that once it is full (roughly 2-3 days) Step 4 - Add a layer of bokashi bran and repeat until the bin is full Step 5 - Leave the sealed bucket for a minimum of 2 weeks to ferment Step 6 - Tap off the compost tea as you with or in one go before emptying out the contents of the bin after the bokashi fermentation Step 7 - Add the fermented food scraps to your compost pile, worm farm or directly to your garden beds. If adding to your beds ensure the hole or trench is at least 30cm deep For more information about my journey and what I am doing please follow me on Facebook - / mysustainabilityjourneyza Please subscribe to my channel to follow me on my journey to leading a more sustainable lifestyle.
