In the wild, elephants have strong family relationships. They communicate with each other using a wide range of sounds, including trumpeting, rumbling, and chirping. Elephants live in herds, led by the oldest and wisest female, called the matriarch. It means an older, experienced lady elephant leads the herd. A herd usually consists of a mother, her sisters, daughters and their babies. Their babies are called calves. At birth, an elephant calf weighs about 100 kilograms. The baby elephant develops for 20 to 22 months inside its mother. No other land animal has such a long gestation. Elephants are herbivores, so they eat many different grasses, fruits, and tree bark. They can eat up to 136 kilograms of food in a single day. Elephants also require a large amount of water and will often travel long distances to find it. There are two species of elephants: the African elephant and the Asian elephant. The African elephant is larger than its Asian counterpart and has bigger ears. Both species are classified as endangered due to poaching, habitat loss, and human-wildlife conflict. Elephants have strong, leathery skin to protect themselves. They have no natural predators except humans. Humans have used them for different things. Tourists love riding elephants, and they also perform in circuses throughout the world. Conservation efforts are underway to protect these majestic animals and ensure their survival for future generations. They are highly intelligent and are able to exhibit complex emotions such as joy, grief, and anger. #elephant #learning #englishspeaking #englishreading #englishvocabulary #wildlife #wizardcenter
