The Yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees | Matthew 16:5-12

When we realize some of the things we used to believe aren't totally true, it can be really unsettling - particularly with issues of faith. A natural tendency is to label things as either entirely good or entirely bad, but oftentimes teaching is more nuanced than that. The Bible says quite a bit about "teaching" and the danger of bad teaching. In such a polarized time, how do we discern what is good and what is bad? Perhaps, we need more nuanced language to this question. In Matthew, when Jesus tells his disciples to beware of the yeast (teaching) of the Pharisees and Sadducees, he is not saying he disagrees with everything they believe. In fact, he shares some important beliefs. He is concerned with particular things they are teaching. In this message, we talk about how the best bad teaching contains elements of truth, the effects of bad teaching, the importance and difficulty of discernment, and building our lives on the foundation of Jesus. MATTHEW 16:5-12 5 Later, after they crossed to the other side of the lake, the disciples discovered they had forgotten to bring any bread. 6 “Watch out!” Jesus warned them. “Beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 7 At this they began to argue with each other because they hadn’t brought any bread. 8 Jesus knew what they were saying, so he said, “You have so little faith! Why are you arguing with each other about having no bread? 9 Don’t you understand even yet? Don’t you remember the 5,000 I fed with five loaves, and the baskets of leftovers you picked up? 10 Or the 4,000 I fed with seven loaves, and the large baskets of leftovers you picked up? 11 Why can’t you understand that I’m not talking about bread?
