IMO the very first steps in clearing up acne is to eat healthy, take zinc supplements, and ensure you have the correct skin care products. Look for the words non- comedonegenic in the product descriptions. Use mineral make up over oil based makeup, and a light sunscreen – moisuriser. This video describes how I define ‘Natural’ in the work I do as a dermatologist- namely avoiding taking tablets such as Accutane, antibiotics and chemicals- drugs. Light in the form of phototherapy using blue or red light can be useful, as can lasers. Phototherapy works as a natural treatment for all types of acne, including blackhead, whitehead, cystic, back acne and even hormonal acne, however best results are seen if acne is inflammatory- namely zits, pustules, pus and pimples. This is because pus and cystic acne- zits are rich in bacteria known as p.acnes. This bacteria produces a chemical called porphyrins. Older generation devices such as Omnilux Blue use only one spectrum of light, however newer devices such as Kleresca use 2 spectrums of blue light. I also use red light to allow for deeper penetration of low level laser emission. My acne phototherapy natural remedy program consists of the following- 1. Omnilux or Lutronic BLUE and RED light. Or Aktalite Red- 10-15 minutes every week for 6-8 weeks. This works best for pus, pustules, and zits. Treatment is painless, and has no downtime. 2. I also like to use supplements as a natural form of treatment- Vitamin A supplementation- maximum at 5000 IU, not to exceed this dose if pregnant. 3. Zinc supplementation – zinc sulphate twice a day. Dose as recommended on the type of zinc sulphate/chelate you buy. 4. Diet. This is the most important aspect of natural home remedies for acne prone skin. Everyone will have unique dietary flare ups- in most people it will be dairy products such as milk and yoghurt, in others high GI foods such as chocolates, sweets, and sugar drinks. Some patients can have a flare up of acne with gluten- this is exceptionally rare. Find out your triggers, and avoid them naturally. 5. Stress- sorry, I can’t help you with this one. For a natural way to decrease breakouts, distress and stop picking. Yoga, meditation, relaxation techniques, and cognitive behaviour therapy are all natural ways to reduce picking, and reduce acne breakouts. 6. Not everyone will respond to natural treatments, if your acne is cystic, scarring and has emotional implications, my suggestion is to seek medical treatment by a board certified Dermatologist. Remember, having acne is one thing, but scarring from cystic acne can be permanent. It is always better to prevent acne scars than to treat acne scars. Thanks for watching, and remember to subscribe!
