Views of Islay, Jura and Gigha Kintyre is the long narrow peninsular on the west of Scotland. Kintyre is a great value day out. Everything in the video was free of charge to explore. Famous for the Paul McCartney song ‘Mull of Kintyre’, the Mull is in fact only the area at the bottom of the peninsula, way off the main roads and very difficult to access. As there is only really a lighthouse there, we decided not to try to visit. We had visited Kintyre in April and went to Saddell Abbey and Saddell Bay and absolutely loved Kintyre. But we knew we’d missed seeing a lot of things on that day so were committed to going back to cover off some more attractions. The Kintyre 66 route is the best way to cover the largest area of the peninsula and can be done in a day, though the A83 side is much faster than the B842, so I recommend driving the B842 first, as a lot of it is single track and I could see that being very tiring to drive back after a long day. Skipness Castle is perhaps the best castle I’ve visited in Scotland. Free to enter, it has a huge, well-preserved superstructure, which contains a host of interesting features and the interior of the tower has been refurbished with wooden floors and makes for a fascinating walk around a high status medieval building. You can actually go onto the battlements of the tower and look out onto an incredible view of the full length of the Isle of Arran on one side and the full length of the Kintyre peninsula down to the Mull of Kintyre on the other. There is the ancient chapel of St Brendan nearby, which sadly we didn’t get time to visit as we’d spent so long at the castle. In April we had visited Saddell Abbey with its old abbey ruins, dating back to 1160AD and graveyard. There is a building which houses carved stones from 14th-16th centuries which were fascinating to see. Just a little further down the road is the entrance to Saddell Bay. The beach itself is beautiful and featured in the ‘Mull of Kintyre’ video. Our main target at Saddell was the Antony Gormley sculpture ‘Grip’ which is a beautiful figure similar to the type at Crosby Beach in Liverpool, this one perched on an outcrop of rocks at the edge of the sea. The angular form of the figure reflects the rocks below, as if it has grown out from them, while its pose just looks out to sea and across to the Isle of Arran, as if just being in awe of the beauty of the scene. It is a truly beautiful location and an inspirational work of art. Campbeltown is the main settlement on Kintyre and is a decent size town. It was very important in the whisky trade in the past and still has 3 large distilleries today. We didn’t have much time at this point so visited the Linda McCartney Memorial Garden which is a beautifully maintained and tranquil space to spend a few moments of contemplation. The statue of Linda is beautifully sculpted and welcomes you into the garden. We enjoyed a moment of peace. And that was all we had time for at Campbeltown, an excuse to go back. An impromptu visit to Machrihanish Beach was a short detour from the A83 on the way out of Campbeltown. The sun had come out at this stage and we spent a short time just enjoying the seascape and the views over to the Isles of Islay and Jura. We then took the A83 back to Tarbert, passing all the nice white sand beaches on the way, with the perspective on Islay and Jura constantly changing as we drove. The Isle of Gigha, much closer than Islay and Jura, also came into view and we would have loved to visit on the short ferry from Tayinloan, but were at the end of the day by this time. Another time, soon we hope. There are so many more things in Kintyre that we weren’t able to do on our visits and we look forward to experiencing this stunning peninsula again in the future. I hope you enjoy the film.
