Maya – The Time Editor

This is a tutorial about nonlinear animation using Maya's Time Editor. First, I use the Content Browser to load a character with Motion Capture data into the workspace: A man walks from left to right, clapping his hands twice towards the end. What I try to achieve is a separation of the walking and the clapping animation. The Time Editor is ideal for this task. In the end we see the character perform the same walk as before, but he claps his hands much earlier during the walk and again much slower later. This may sound simple, but it isn't, because one has to understand the workflow in order to get the proper data loaded into the Time Editor. The Time Editor looks and behaves like a video editor with several tracks and was introduced in Maya 2017 and has been neglected by many. One of the reasons probably is the unpopularity of the Trax Editor – which did basically the same as the Time Editor now does.
