Dominator of drone market? The Rise of DJI : Part 1

Wang Tao (Frank Wang), founder of DJI, faced many challenges before achieving success. Born in the 1980s, he dropped out of university, was rejected by top foreign schools, and eventually completed his studies at HKUST. Known for his bad temper and perfectionism, Wang criticized others' work but succeeded in creating China’s first autonomously hovering drone. Today, DJI is valued over 140 billion RMB with annual revenues exceeding 30 billion RMB. Wang's interest in drones began in childhood after seeing a hovering helicopter. This curiosity led him to build model aircraft and study flight control systems. Helicopters, unlike stable fixed-wing aircraft, are inherently unstable and require complex controls to hover. Determined to solve these issues, Wang chose to study at HKUST, where he excelled in robotics competitions. Despite initial failures and a low dissertation grade, Wang's persistence impressed his mentor, Professor Li Zexiang, who provided extensive support, including funding, talent, and encouragement to start a business. In 2006, Wang founded DJI Innovations in Shenzhen. Initially struggling with industry challenges and his inexperience as a CEO, Wang’s ambition and Li's support helped DJI grow. They developed critical technologies like reliable flight control, real-time image transmission, and autonomous flight, essential for commercial drones. Wang's journey highlights his persistence, innovation, and the importance of mentorship in his success.
