Even when digital pianos became popular in the '90s and 2000s, they replicated the grand piano tones, which were featured on even budget-friendly models. However, the world of recording is shifting, and we’re starting to see upright pianos gaining traction, offering a unique and different tone that’s catching attention. As an upright piano enthusiast, I’m thrilled to see this new sound palette making its way into the recording world. And today, I want to introduce you to one piano that has genuinely surprised me—it’s not a $100,000 German masterpiece, nor a top-tier Steinway. Instead, it’s the Kawai K-800, a piano that’s widely considered one of the best uprights Japan has to offer. While Kawai may not be a brand commonly associated with recording studios, the K-800 stands out. In today’s video, we’ll explore why this piano is so special. We’ll dive deep into its features, and to make things even more exciting, we’ll be testing various microphone placements using two stereo wireless microphones to find the optimal recording setup. Whether you're considering this piano for personal use or as a studio instrument, you'll walk away with a better understanding of its musical capabilities. Let’s get started! What Makes the Kawai K-800 Special? For those unfamiliar, the Kawai K-800 is a fully Japanese-built instrument from one of the world's largest and most respected piano manufacturers. Known for their expertise in acoustic and digital pianos, Kawai continues to innovate with the K-800, which—although about 10 years old—is still considered a relatively new model in the piano world. At 53 inches tall, the K-800 is slightly larger than a standard upright, but its unique features set it apart: Royal George Felt Hammers: Kawai uses a premium version of their hammers with mahogany cores, wrapped in double-felted Royal George Felt. This gives the K-800 a distinct tonal advantage over other models like the K-400 and K-500. Extended Scale Design: The added height allows for longer bass strings and a larger soundboard, resulting in richer sound projection and better tonal depth. Treble Duplex Scaling: A feature typically found in grand pianos, treble duplex scaling adds richness to the upper register, making the K-800 stand out among upright pianos. Grand Piano-Like Key Action: The keys on the K-800 are slightly longer, offering a touch and feel more akin to a grand piano. This enhances the overall playing experience. Why the K-800 Shines in the Studio While the K-800 isn’t cheap, it delivers the depth, character, and versatility needed for professional studio use at a relatively affordable price point. Three standout qualities make it a strong contender for recording environments: Impressive Sustain: The K-800 offers an astonishingly long sustain—lasting up to 30 seconds—which rivals or even surpasses some grand pianos. What’s more, the sustain is balanced across the tonal range, giving the piano a harmonious shimmer throughout its decay. Rich Bass: The extended bass strings on the K-800 produce a warm, clear tone without the muddiness often found in larger uprights. This makes it ideal for recording, where clarity in the bass is essential. The Fun Part: Mic Placements and Sound Testing To truly demonstrate the K-800’s recording potential, I experimented with four different microphone placements. This test will give you an idea of how the K-800 sounds in different studio setups, and I’d love to hear your thoughts on which placement sounded best and why! Conclusion The Kawai K-800 is more than just a beautiful upright piano—it’s a serious contender for studio recording. With its extended sustain, rich tonal depth, and precise action, this piano offers something truly special at a price point that’s surprisingly reasonable for what it delivers. If you’ve ever considered adding an upright piano to your studio, the K-800 might be exactly what you’re looking for. Thank you for joining me on this exploration of the Kawai K-800!
