How to and a few tips and tricks surfcasting off the sand - Reel kiwi fishing adventures

With a very quiet time for our surfcasting in the north I thought it would be a great time to go over a few how to's and tricks that may help you with your surfcasting from the sand. I have always loved my surfcasting and starting from a young age I have had some great surfcasting adventures. Surfcasting from the sand is a lot different than fishing from the rocks, the fish are more out in the open so they are a lot more shy and sometimes out of reach for most fisho's as they stay in the deeper water at times. Around the rocks fish can hide in the kelp and in crevices of reefs which are right at your feet at times, this is where they also find there food - on the sand it can be hard to figure out where they could be mooching for food. Holes, gutters and troughs are what you want to find when fishing the sand, swells and waves stir up food and fish feel safer in that darker sandy water. Working on your presentation of your baits are great mainly to expose the barb for a good hook set, fish are intelligent but I think when it comes to food the smell instinct takes over everything. Working on your casting will help you a long way, although you don't always have to cast 100mtrs plus it's always good to know you are able to if needed. A great way to learn is either on a field or even just casting a sinker at the beach, knowing how to hold the line to holding the rod correctly will help you gain a lot more distance. Tight lines
