Beethoven: Symphony No. 3, Eroica, 1st movement | Paavo Järvi & Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen

Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Eroica” performed by the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen under conductor Paavo Järvi – a great interpretation of a masterful composition. As long as an entire symphony by other composers, the first movement of Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major, opus 55, does full justice to its subtitle: "Eroica," or "heroic." The tempo marking is "Allegro con brio" (fast, energetic), but that's not the full description. Everything about this movement is big, and there's a sense of depth and breadth as well. To match, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, whose name translates as "Chamber Philharmonic," is a smallish orchestra but with a big sound. Ludwig van Beethoven wrote his Third Symphony not long after having gone through a life-threatening crisis, as described in his "Heiligenstadt Testament." Faced with unavoidable approaching deafness, the composer felt he was near the end – and it was only his love of music that held him back from suicide. The Symphony No. 3 dates from 1803 – and it forever changed the concept of the symphony altogether. There was revolution in the air: Napoleon's ideas had captivated the young generation, to which Beethoven belonged. He first wanted to name this work "Bonaparte" but later changed the name to honor not a particular individual but instead, to highlight the concept of heroism altogether. Deutsche Welle and Unitel Classica present Estonian conductor Paavo Järvi, conductor of the year 2019, and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, recorded at the Beethovenfest in Bonn.
