Optional Homework Swatches: Swatch #1 - cable with i-cord edges CO 13 stitches using long tail cast on. Row 1 WS: With yarn in front, slip 3 stitches to right needle point to point, k2, with tip of right needle, pick up and knit 1 stitch from each of the next 3 purl bumps below stitches on left needle - (see this video for help -    • Cable Flare Reduction Cast On  . Please note, that since I made that video that I have refined my technique and now pick up the stitches by going DOWN into the purl bump rather than UP as shown in this video.), purl 3 from left needle, k2, with yarn in front slip the last three stitches to the right needle point to point. Row 2: K3, p2, k6, p2, k3. Row 3: Slip 3, k2, p6, k2, slip 3. Row 4: K3, slip 3 stitches to left needle point to point, k3, p2, k6, p2, k3, slip 3 stitches to left needle point to point, k3. Row 5: Same as row 3. Row 6: K3, p2, work 3/3 RC cross (three over three right cable cross - see this video for how to work cable crossings without a cable needle -    • Cabling Without a Cable Needle - a Co...  ), p2, k3. Row 7: same as row 3. Repeat rows 2-5 one time. BO: BO in pattern up to the cable. Rearrange the next 6 stitches so that you can work stitches 1&4, 2&5 and 3&6 together (see this video -    • Cable Flare Reduction Bind Off  ), work each set as a k2tog and bind off as in video, bo remaining stitches in pattern. Weave in ends and block. Swatch #2 - Contrast color knitted on i-cord plus buttonhole. You will need a contrast color of yarn. With contrast color, CO 2 sts, with main color CO 10 sts. Row 1WS: Purl 9 sts, k1, bring contrast yarn up under main color of yarn and slip 2 sts. Row 2: With contrast color k2, slip those two stitches back to left needle, k2, pick up main color from under contrast color, p1, k9. Repeat rows 1 and 2 until you have 1.5" of fabric ending after a WS row. Buttonhole: *K2, slip two stitches back to left needle, repeat from * until desired length of buttonhole, pick up main color from under contrast color, p1, k9. Continue in pattern set prior to buttonhole for 1.5". BO in pattern, weave in ends and block.
