Tripura was one of the most important princely states in India, ruled by the Kings of the Manikya dynasty. Rajmala is a chronicle of the Kings of Tripura, written in the 15th century under King Dharma Manikya I. As per the Rajmala, Tripura's history goes back 500 years. At it's peak, the Tripura kingdom, included the whole eastern region of Bengal from the Brahmaputra River in the north and west, the Bay of Bengal in the south and Burma to the east during the 14th and 15th centuries CE. During the Mughal period, around 1600s, Tripura became divided into 'Hill Tripura' or the present day state of Tripura and 'Plains Tripura' or 'Chakla Roshanabad' that comprised of Comilla and Noakhali regions of present day Bangladesh. Maharaja Ishan Chandra Manikya (r. 1849-1862) was the grandfather of the famous music director Sachin Deb Burman and great grandfather of Rahul Deb Burman. Ishan Chandra's brother Maharaja Bir Chandra Manikya was an avid photographer and is credited with taking the first 'Selfie' in India. The magnificent 'Ujjayanta Palace' in Tripura was built by Maharaja Radhakishore Manikya after the great earthquake of 1897. He was also a patron to Rabindranath Tagore and JC Bose. Maharaja Bir Bikram Manikya was one of the greatest rulers of Tripura, who built the Neer Mahal, the only lake palace in Eastern India. Following his demise in 1947, the princely state was merged into India by his widow Maharani Kanchanprabha Devi who was the Regent of the state.
