Sunrise adventure in beautiful Dolomites😊 Day before we have seen that we can get great spring sking conditions but only if we are early enough. After thinking of various plans we soon decided for our main goal Sasso Vernale (3058 m, line #1) and start time (early to reach summit at sunrise). But open to do additional lines/change plane according to the conditions during the day. So we started early 02:15 in the morning but we didn't have any problems with that since we expected great skiing after sunrise. Ascend was smooth and fast. It was completely silent, dark with bright stars on the sky. Higher up we ascended over huge slopes, felt even bigger than in the fall when we descended with mountainbikes. We wanted to check possible lines from the summit but exit of the top face was too far for our headlamps - it was still completely dark. Soon it become colder, snow got hard - we transition to crampons. First part on crampons didn't hold me all time and I was thinking how good skiing will be? Luckily conditions soon become icy and climbing was fast and enyojable. Than first lights of sunrise started to pop up. I can't describe it but it was simply magic. We couldn't climb fast and there was no need since snow was still icy. Great conditions but impossible not to stop, look around, take a photo, video and repeat it many times to the summit. For sure my best climb yet. We reached the top 07:00. After some waiting on the ridge enjoying 360 views snow still wasn't ready. So Rea dig a snow sofa - it was comftable, wind protected and sun warmed us and SW face. After 1 hour and 30 minutes snow was in perfect spring condition. Skiing down big steep face in super G style. Lower part I slowed down since we didn't knew where excatly we will exit upper face. Exit couloir didn't hold snow so we went back up and skied till terrain became almost flat. Couldn't believed how good skiing was. It was still early and another line was in our mind - Sas De Valfreida (3003 m, line #2). ‪@marcobassot‬ showed me this line during our mountainbike tour in this region. We looked it from Ombretola (2923 m) and it looked impossible to ski it. I also checked it in the ski mountaineering book but didn't have serious plan to do it. On that day seeing it in person with snow, actually a lot of snow (better filled than in book) line called to be skied. So we ascended on skis to the line - spring conditions. Line is in north direction and you can guess it held powder in great quantities and quality. Quick ECT test and we were ascending a line, another great ascend with ascending plates. The summit was for sure skiable - enough snow but we decided to skip the summit and start a little lower to save time and have better/safer conditions bellow the line. Snow was perfect powder on steep face. Skiing was simple, fast, big turns - pure joy😊 Big slopes bellow line were spring conditions and also some powder in the shades of big walls. Than nice, spring or more like summer walk to the car.
