Honda XR650R Upper Engine Teardown and Inspection

After a cylinder leakdown test of the XR650R engine, it was clear that the valves were pitted. Riding the bike for the first time would be delayed. The aim at that point was careful disassembly of the upper engine and a close inspection of the head, valves, piston, rings, valvetrain, camshaft and cylinder. This how-to applies to the XR650R but also provides an orientation to other XR Honda engine teardowns. Unique to the XR650R is its liquid cooling. The bigger bore, four-valve single cylinder XRs have similar layouts and dry sump lubrication. (The XR350R is wet sump; the XR500R, XR600R and XR400R share dry sump lubrication with the XR650R.) All work on our motorcycles follows factory shop manual guidelines. Use the appropriate Honda workshop manual for your work as well.
