Representatives from nearly 200 countries are trying to hash out an international agreement on preserving the planet's ecosystems at the UN’s COP15 biodiversity summit in Montreal. This is a crucial goal as human activities take a greater toll on Earth's environment and the overwhelming number of species living in it. Over 100 Quebec civil society organizations, the CBD Alliance, the Global Youth Biodiversity Network, Greenpeace Canada and numerous indigenous delegations from around the globe marched from Mount Royal to the Quartier des Spectacles. They demanded that governments establish a global biodiversity framework that is strong enough to halt and reverse biodiversity loss, as well as guarantee the respect of human rights of all those who protect the world's ecosystems — including the rights of Indigenous peoples. But as Global’s Mackenzie Grey reports, that hasn't stopped growing skepticism over whether world leaders are taking the issue seriously.
