Thandai Thai Irundal by Padmashri Awardee Sangita Kalanidhi Smt. Aruna Sairam

There is a story of personal significance behind this song of mine. Back in the early 90s when I was struggling to make a mark in the Chennai Carnatic world, a friend of mine suggested that I sing the song - Thandai Thai Irundal - originally sung by the diva N. C. Vasanthakokilam, at my concert that year. However, after listening to it, I was so daunted by it that I was convinced I wouldn't match up to the tremendous articulation and power that you experience in N. C. Vasanthakokilam's version. But on his insistence, I learned and practised the song and managed to render it at one of the two concerts I had that year. About 3 years later, I was once again in Chennai on the 31st of December, performing a concert when a lady came up to me and requested me to sing that song. She said that it was her payday and her family could use the money but despite that, she left work early so that she could hear me perform that song live. Even now, that interaction has remained a precious memory to me. Also, over the years, a lot of my rasikas fell in love with this song and it went on to become an integral part of my repertoire. *About Aruna Sairam* Aruna Sairam (Padma Shri) is a Carnatic vocalist, composer, collaborator, humanitarian, and speaker. In addition to her performances in India, Aruna has taken Carnatic music to the global arena, at prestigious venues including the Royal Albert Hall and Carnegie Hall. Currently Vice Chairperson of the Sangeet Natak Akademi, Delhi, she was appointed in 2008 by the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu as Advisor to the Department of Culture. Aruna works towards the musical education of underprivileged students, through the Nadayogam Trust, which she founded in 2011. Aruna is grateful for the training she received under her mother Rajalakshmi Sethuraman and the legendary T. Brinda, and the mentorship from several masters throughout her musical journey. Her music erased geographic borders when she was the first to incorporate Abhang, a Western Indian musical form, into a traditional, South Indian concert. *Stay Up To Date* Official Website: http://smarturl.it/ArunaSairamWebsite Like on Facebook: http://smarturl.it/ArunaSairamFacebook Follow on Instagram:   / arunasairam.carnaticmusic   Subscribe on YouTube: http://smarturl.it/ArunaSairamYouTube Follow on Twitter: http://smarturl.it/ArunaSairamTwitter #Carnatic #CarnaticMusic #IndianClassicalMusic #ArunaSairam
