(6 Sep 1995) T/I: 11:12:44 French Foreign Minister Herve de Charette said on Wednesday (6/9) that French underground nuclear tests in the South Pacific were harmless to the environment and necessary to complete the country's nuclear testing programme. De Charette noted that the International Atomic Energy Agency had been asked to organise an independent international scientific mission to evaluate the impact of the tests at the end of the planned series of eight next May. He also said that France was showing unprecedented openness and transparency in the conduct of the tests, announcing them more than two months in advance and giving full facilities to the national and international press. In order to sign this treaty, France has to carry out a small number of tests so as to acquire sufficient data in order to perform simulated tests. It has been proved that these tests are harmless and are respectful of the environment. We have approached the International Agency for Atomic Testing.
