We recently posted a video of the batch of trees we were sent, as they came off the pallet. With them all safely in the ground, I thought I'd show where they've been planted, and why. A well designed shelterbelt surrounding a system can significantly increase productivity over the land as a whole, while providing a number of yields in itself. As the croft is slowly transitioning to an agroforestry system, the shelterbelt plantings are a vital component of the overall design for the site. In this video I explain how the new trees fit into the earlier tree plantings, and how they complete several sections of the overall design. In total, we have now planted well over 7000 trees on the site, with the majority being in the shelterbelt systems. It really is amazing how raw land seems to drink trees by the thousand, but planting intelligently can give positive results within a few years.
