THAILAND: 2ND ALLEGED MEMBER OF AUM SHINRI KYO CULT ARRESTED

(24 Feb 1996) English/Nat Thai police have arrested a second man suspected of being linked to a Japanese doomsday religious cult accused of carrying out the fatal nerve gas attack on a Tokyo subway last year. The latest arrest in Bangkok comes less than a week before a major Asia-Europe summit meeting in Thailand. Police - in a crackdown on security before the summit - suspect the alleged Aum Shinri Kyo cult member of plotting terrorists acts during the March 1-2 meeting of leaders from 25 Asian and European countries. Thai police arrested Thursday 31-year-old Hiroyuki Shiyama who they suspect Japanese cult, Aum Shinir Kyo. On his arrest at a guest house in Bangkok they also found a small quantity of marijuana in his possession. The Japanese religious doomsday cult has been accused of carrying out the fatal nerve gas attack on a Tokyo subway last year, killing 12 people and affecting 5,500 others. Police say Shiyama is an associate of 51-year-old Keijiro Ota who was arrested a few days earlier in Thailand. Ota is allegedly not only a cult member but an assistant to Aum's leader. Authorities suspect that the Japanese man was planning to carry out terrorist acts next week at the Asia-Europe summit in Thailand. The arrests come as Thai police are toughening up security measures ahead of the summit on March 1-2 which will be attended by leaders from 10 Asian and 25 European countries. SOUNDBITE: "We try to prevent all of this not to happen before or during the summit." SUPER CAPTION: Maj. Gen. Vera Pithakphol, Deputy Commissioner of Thai Immigration Police Japanese embassy officials, who had requested Ota's arrest on an extortion charge, have said the arrested man's links with the cult are not clear. But they thanked the police for their swift work. SOUNDBITE: "I came to say thank you for the co-operation of Thai police authorities to apprehend a person that Japanese authorities have been trying to arrest." SUPER CAPTION: Yoshikawa Motohide, Japanese Embassy spokesman Police found a forged international press pass in Shiyama's hotel - a pass which would have enabled him to get close to the leaders at next week's summit. Although there are fears of a terrorist cell planted in the country ahead of the meeting, Thai authorities say there is still no evidence of a terrorist plot - other than that Shiyama is thought by police to be working for Ota. SOUNDBITE: "He is one of the members working for Ota. Ota is their leader and this one is one of his men. But in importance of the people, Mr Ota is higher." SUPER CAPTION: Police Maj Gen. Vera Pithakphol When the seven ASEAN leaders met in Bangkok a couple of months ago security was notably laid back. Officers outside the conference fell asleep. Now Thai authorities are eager to reassure everyone that the 25 leaders will be securely protected by 5,000 specially trained officers mobilised for the meeting. Police say they are working closely with INTERPOL to keep any more suspected terrorists out of the country.
