Bury St Edmunds Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the East Anglian county of Suffolk is the town of Bury St Edmunds. In the 9th century it went by the Saxon name: 'Beodericsworth', meaning 'house of Beoderic' to whom the manor belonged. The town was later renamed after Edmund, King of East Anglia, who was captured and killed by the Danes during the Viking raids. In 1020 King Cnut rebuilt the town and abbey, and in 1080 Abbot Baldwin designed a grid pattern to which the town was, and still is, designed. In other words, Bury St Edmunds is one of the world's oldest grid towns. It predates Milton Keynes by around 900 years! In Medieval times, the Abbey of St Edmund was one of the richest, largest and most powerful Benedictine monasteries in England. People from all over Europe came to visit the shrine of St Edmund located within. But in 1539 it was mostly destroyed in accordance with Henry VIII's dissolution of the monasteries. However the Abbey Gate still stands as an iconic landmark of Bury St Edmunds, dating back to the 14th century. In 1799 Benjamin Greene founded a brewery in Bury St Edmunds. In 1887 it merged with another brewery owned by Frederick William King, thus Greene King was born. To this day it is the UK's largest pub retailer and brewer. On the other side of the palate, British Sugar, whose retail arm is Silver Spoon, owns a beet processing factory in Bury St Edmunds - one of only four remaining in the country. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
