Link to the B-side, “The Lost Variation”    • “The Lost Variation” - B side to “Mem...   Before Elaine Paige or Betty Buckley pulled on their rugged, fur coats and blasted this classic each night in the theatre, this was the original recording of the song, tentatively called “Memory”, that was mainly sent out to disk-jockeys to promote the show in London before it’s opening night. This recording features Gary Moore on guitar and Lloyd Webber up to all sorts on his new synthesisers! Along with the brilliant “Variations” band and the London Philharmonic orchestra. Incidentally, this is the recording Elaine Paige heard in her car. The next day she got the call from Cameron Mackintosh begging Elaine to take over the role at the last minute after they lost their star, Judi Dench, in a dance mishap. I personally love the old Lloyd Webber orchestrations around this period. He knew how to combine the Synthetic with the Symphonic. This is the best quality recording I have, and I was lucky to find it so I’m not complaining. The B side is “The Lost Variation” which is basically A minor theme set to a disco track.
