The demise of diesel cars, new trade deals and the uncertainty surrounding Brexit have all been blamed for Honda's decision to close its Swindon plant. Itfollows moves by Nissan last year to scale back car production in the UK. However, Britain has weathered such storms before. The industrial unrest of the 1970s contributed to the financially crippled British Leyland being nationalised. But the storm continued. In 1977 Britain became a net importer of cars for the first time. By the mid-80s, British Leyland was gone. Yet the British car industry survived, and went onto prosper. Margaret Thatcher championed Britain as the place to build cars and enticed the likes of Nissan, Peugeot and Honda to open plants in the UK. Can something similar happen again as car manufacturers pivot to the production of electric vehicles?
